How to Put on a Successful Grassroots to Champions (G2C) SEMINAR

STEP ONE - SETTING IT UP

1. CHECK RINK SCHEDULE. Before contacting G2C, check with your rink for dates and availability of ice and off-ice room. You must have at least 4 hours of ice time and 3 hours of off-ice. It is recommended that you allow a minimum of 2 months to prepare for a G2C Seminar.
2. CONTACT G2C. Sheila Thelen, Executive Director at Phone: 651-257-1004 or email sk8thelen@aol.com OR coach6605@aol.com to check for availability and discuss special needs. G2C will tailor a package to fit your needs.
3. CONFIRM DATE. Confirm your date with G2C and send deposit to reserve your space.
4. HOTEL BOOKING. Book hotel for coaches (verify number of rooms needed with G2C).

STEP TWO - PREPARE FOR SUCCESS

1. DELEGATE RESPONSIBILITIES. Decide who will do what so that no important tasks are left out, in order to ensure success.
2. SOLICIT INTEREST. Distribute information to skaters in your area and send emails to local coaches with information. Set a deadline for sign ups to avoid a lot of last minute registrations, or offer an incentive for early bird sign ups. To avoid no shows, you might want to make the registration fee due at sign up and make it non refundable.
3. REGISTRATIONS. Confirm each registration as it is received. It is recommended that one person handles all registrations.
4. SPONSORSHIP. Contact local merchants for possible sponsorship for the seminar. In return for sponsorship, offer them advertising space in the program flyer.
5. PROGRAM FLYER. It is a good idea to create a program flyer, outlining the program, along with possible advertisements by local merchants, the rink's pro shop, services offered by the rink and vendors at the event if any etc.
6. VOLUNTEERS. Enlist volunteers to assist the day of the seminar with registration and distribution of materials and meals, snacks, etc.

STEP THREE - 2 WEEKS BEFORE SEMINAR

1. COORDINATING WITH G2C. Approximately 2 weeks before seminar date, contact G2C with registration numbers. This will allow G2C to adjust the agenda and provide adequate supplies for the seminar as needed. You may need a TV, VCR/DVD and screen or projector. Some larger groups may need a portable mic.
2. LIST AND NAMES TAGS. As you get closer to the seminar day, compile participant list of skaters, coaches and parents. Name tags are helpful for the skaters. G2C will need a copy of the participants. Email to sk8Thelen@aol.com
3. TRANSPORTATION. Arrange for transportation from/to airport, hotel and rink for G2C Seminar Faculty Members.

STEP FOUR - DAY BEFORE AND DAY OF SEMINAR

SAMPLE G2C SCHEDULE

8:00-8:15 am intros

8:15-8:45 am Dartfish classroom and G2C off-ice h/d positions

8:45-8:50 am break into 3 groups (2 on-ice and 1 off-ice)

8:50-9:30 am 2 on-ice classes, 1 off-ice

9:35-10:15 am rotate groups

10:20-11:00 am rotate groups

11:00 am-12:00 pm lunch, coaches chat w/G2C coaches

12:00-12:50 pm off-ice presentations

1:00-2:00 pm 3 groups (2 on-ice and 1 off-ice)

2:00-3:00 pm rotate

3:00-4:00 pm rotate

4:00-4:30 pm Parents chat off-ice; Skaters rest - Long Day!

4:30-5:00 pm wrap-up, bye

Morning topics:
Classroom: G2C Jump Formula & Dartfish video analysis (1x, 2x, 3x, 4x)
Group 1: G2C Alignment drills - on ice (H & D) & Ankle Buzzers
Group 2: Jumps/Spins/Landing positions - on ice (with Champion Cords)
Group 3: Off Ice Harness - Axis drills and Rotation (H & D)

LUNCH: Boot & Blade Seminar by Riedell Skates

Afternoon topics:
Off Ice: Champion performances, more Dartfish analysis, industry technology
Group 1: On Ice: Jumps (Axel, Salchow, Loop)
Group 2: On Ice: Jumps (Loop, Flip, Lutz)
Group 3: Off Ice: Language of Skating/Jump Ropes/Goal Setting

Parents Chat: Parents HIGHLY encouraged to attend.

STEP FIVE
1. Assemble supplies, goodie bags, check with rink to confirm ice cuts and room availability.
2. On day of seminar, have tables set up for registration 45 min before start. Be prepared for last minute sign-ups, late arrivals and no shows.
3. After seminar, assign transportation for G2C Seminar Faculty Members if needed.

CONCLUSION

2. After the seminar, email the participant list to G2C at sk8Thelen@aol.com in the case it has changed.
